President William Ruto jokingly promised Bishop Kagunga of ACK St. Peter’s Cathedral Nyeri a wheelbarrow. He said that he had planned to buy him a car but the church had done so. The president asked him to visit the statehouse so that he could give him a token of appreciation “wheelbarrow.” “So rafiki yangu bishop, sometime next week I will organize unitembelee nikupatie zawadi ya urafiki kati yangu mimi na wewe na wale wengine.”
During the same event, the president reiterated the need to work for the people of Kenya without praise. He called on leaders to serve the people instead of engaging in superiority battles. The president said this amidst the ongoing fight against the illicit brew in Central Kenya which has caused divisions amongst leaders in the region. He said that the only way to take the country forward is by avoiding populist strategy and leading, reminding the leaders that they have not been elected to be popular but to lead and to serve.
We Are not Elected to Be Popular
“I want to tell leaders in Kenya, whether we are in church or politics. We are not elected so that we can be popular. We are elected so that we can lead and serve and in leadership and service we must make correct decisions, not popular decisions.” The head of state said. He further affirmed his stand against drugs, alcoholism, recklessness, wastage, reckless borrowing, and corruption. Furthermore, he said this while drumming support for his deputy towards his fight against alcoholism in Central Kenya. He further hinted that the fuel prices had dropped by 10 shillings. He urged all the leaders to work together as a team as they strive to take the country forward.
