Adopt to new Situation, President Ruto Urges the Universities

President William Ruto today the 2nd of May 2024 awarded the Management University of Africa and Tangaza University a charter and said that Kenya now hosts 64 chartered universities. He said the country must continue striving for the ever-growing demand for higher education, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic should make the universities adapt to the new situation and adopt e-learning as a model of delivery.

High Standards and Integrity- President Ruto

He urged the universities to focus on ICT as they think about the future, and as the world moves towards artificial intelligence. The president said that the greatest single resource that a country can have is human capital and education plays a critical role. He therefore urged the Commission for University Education (CUE) to insist on high standards and integrity because it is only through this that we can have professionals.

During the award ceremony, the head of state pointed out the importance of ensuring that the development of the curriculum is responsive to the changing needs. He outlined the government’s dedication to ensuring that no student is left behind by providing support through scholarships, and higher education funds.

The New Funding System

The new funding model proposed by the Kenya Kwanza government will see some students get 30% and not the 80% as it has been in the previous model. This is in a bid to bridge the gap between commitment and reality. The president further said that students from vulnerable backgrounds will have the highest scholarship, in a bid to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
