President William Ruto has today appointed Lieutenant Charles Muriu Kahariri as the Chief of Defence Forces after promoting him to the rank of general. This follows the death of General Francis Ogolla who passed on from a chopper crash two weeks ago. The president has also promoted Major general John Mugaravai Omenda and appointed him as the vice chief of defence forces.

The statement sent to newsrooms read, “His Excellency Hon Dr William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H, President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, pursuant to section 9 (2) (a) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, has today promoted Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of General and appointed him the Chief of the Defence Forces.”

Other Appoints and Promotions

Other officers who were promoted include Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed who has been promoted to be the Kenya Airforce commander, Thomas Ng’ang’a (Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration and Finance at the National Defence University), Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji(Senior Directing Staff, Air at National Defence College), Brigadier Jattani Kampare Gula(Managing Director, Kenya Meat Commission), and Brigadier George Okumu(Managing Director, Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory).

Congratulatory Messages Following the Appointments

Several leaders and other Kenyans congratulated the new CDF following his appointment by the head of state. On his X handle, Aden Duale, the Cabinet Secretary for Defence wrote, “Congratulations Lieutenant General Charles Murui Kahariri on your promotion to the rank of General and subsequent appointment by President William Ruto, as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).”

Alinur Mohammed also passed his congratulatory message on X and thanked the head of state for this appointment. “Congratulations to my friend Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri, who has replaced late General Francis Ogolla as the new CDF. Asante Dr. Ruto, for promoting Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of General and for appointing him the Chief of Defence Forces.”

Hon Caleb Khamisi also wrote, “Congratulations Lt Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri on your promotion to the rank of General and appointment as the Chief of Defence Forces(CDF). We look forward to your continued leadership in ensuring the safety and well-being of our country.”
