The past few weeks have tested whether our infrastructural development can withstand the effects of floods. The amount of rain that is being experienced in the country is good for agricultural purposes but has also had negative impacts on our infrastructure. Moreover, the floods have led to the loss of lives in different parts of the country. A few days ago, social media was ripe with videos of flooded roads, and vehicles being carried away by water. Mathare, Githurai, Kahawa, Maai Mahiu, Athi River, Makueni, Turkana, and West Pokot to name but a few areas that have had to deal with the wrath of nature. Yesterday, the country had the most devastating news during this flooding period. Kijabe dam broke its banks and it is reported that more than 71 people have so far lost their lives.

Infrastructure destroyed by floods
Mathare Floods
Mochuriri bridge
The bridge which connects Igonga and Matongo in Bonchari Constituency’s Bomariba ward in Kisii County is impassable because of the heavy rains experienced in the area.
Ngeria
The road at Ngeria, along Nakuru-Eldoret highway was flooded and this forced the motorists to use alternative routes.

Murera Bridge

WestPokot Turkana Road Cut-Off
The highway was cut-off at Lou in West Pokot, affecting the travel between the two Counties.
Mai Mahiu Floods
Water in a gulley at the old Kijabe railway tunnel killed more than 70 people and left many others injured.
Athi River Floods
The Star newspaper reported that floods caused the old Athi River bridge to be closed.
Coastal Roads and Bridges
A section of submerged roads and bridges at the coast.
Embobut Bridge
The bridge, located in Sokobora broke down yesterday injuring three people. The breakdown was attributed to ongoing floods.
